Ulverston has become the first Lake District town to bring the area’s vibrant history to life with Augmented Reality technology. Ulverston BID has been working with the place promotion app LoyalFree since 2018 to provide local businesses a platform to promote offers, event listings and fun trails.
Ulverston BID Chair Michelle Scrogham said “I’m delighted to see this new project launch. Ulverston has a long history of innovation and a strong business base in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths so it’s no surprise that we’re leading the way on this fun new way to explore our town”.
The new augmented reality trail, launching this month, will let app users seamlessly explore the town discovering historic buildings, hidden ginnels and quaint cobbled streets by unlocking images from the past.
Augmented reality overlays digital content and information onto the physical world — as if they’re actually there with you, in your own space.
The exciting trail will be run digitally through the LoyalFree app and residents can utilise the town’s free Wi-Fi to watch familiar buildings get transformed into past wonders in front of their eyes!
Justin Wales, Ulverston BID Manager, said: ‘‘We are thrilled to be the first town in the Lake District to launch an Augmented Reality trail. I hope locals and visitors enjoy watching Ulverston’s exciting history be brought to life again.’’
Locals and visitors are encouraged to discover the vibrant stories at each location by following the narrations in the app. Explorers can then view the Augmented Reality content by scanning the AR Markers, displayed at each trail location. Why not see if you can visit them all?
Start this brand new trail and easily see where the next location is with the handy map and directions features on the app. To take part simply log in on the LoyalFree app, head to the trails section and try it yourself – it’s completely free!
If you are a business in Ulverston who would like to promote yourself on the LoyalFree app please email [email protected]. This is funded entirely by the Ulverston BID for businesses and the community to enjoy and explore Ulverston Past and Present!
